freelance writer

The first thing ever published for me was my book “Practical Kung Fu: How to stop an attacker in five moves or less” . It was published by Triumph Books out of Chicago, Illinois. Triumph Books was owned by and operated the sports publication division for publishing giant, Random House Books.

I was approached to write it in 2007 and had a total of 90 days to complete it from start to finish, to say that it was a rushed project was an understatement. The book was released in 2008 at bookstores everywhere. The first major order for it came in at launch, BORDERS BOOKS had ordered 2500 copies. My mind was blown, after all, I was not a writer, I could barely type. I had some friends help put it together. In hindsight, if I had six months to get it done, it would have been, in my opinion, so much better.

Around 2009, I wrote a couple of freelance pieces for Inside Kung Fu Magazine, Art of the Warrior magazine and a self defense blog for Laura Burgess Marketing. These articles were in a comfort zone for me, I could write about martial arts and fighting all day long. While my grammar and editing skills are not perfect now, they were worse back, luckily I had always worked with great editors.

And Then It happened. Circa 2010, one of the most legendary survival instructors had approached me to write for his publication, his name was RON HOOD and his magazine was SURVIVAL QUARTERLY. I accepted the challenge, we became great friends and again I worked with amazing editors. This was the true launch for me as a writer.I began receiving  steady freelance work from several national firearm, knife, survival industry publications.

To date, I have written hundreds of articles ranging from product reviews to self defense articles, all with about 90% self-produced photography.

I am currently a regular contributor to several industry print magazines such as: Personal Defense World, SKILLSET Magazine, Survivor’s Edge, Prepper Survival Guide, Concealed Carry Magazine, Backwoods Survival Guide, The Truth About Guns (Online) Knife and Gear Review (online).
